- The day started with a slobbery awakening. Maple’s german shepard, Turtle, was licking her face, the same way he did every morning when he wanted to go out. So she sat up, wiped her eyes, put on her thick glasses and saw that it was only 6 AM“Geez Turtle, why this early!”“You have to work at 8!”“Oh right,”Maple got turtle just before she moved to town. She had always wanted a dog, so she decided to get herself a little graduation gift after college. Over the years, he had become her best friend. He was like a roommate that is always organized and put together, except he’s a dog.She rolled out of bed, and went into the bathroom to wash her face. She moved sluggishly throughout her apartment, getting a couple things done in the process. She made herself some black tea, turned on the news, ate some eggs.“Can you go any faster?” asked Turtle.“You know I like my time in the morning, give me like 5 more minutes,” Maple then put down Turtles breakfast to keep him distracted. She put on her warmest socks and her warmest sweater.“Okay, c’mon Turtle, c’mon boy!”“Finally, I smell something outside, we need to go check it out.”“It’s never anything Turtle, that’s how this town is.”“Not this time.”Maple shrugged off his comment. She had lived here for 2 years, and she had never heard anything about a crime. Or even someone dying, or anything remotely interesting to a criminology major. She dreamed of moving to a dangerous neighborhood where her and turtle could fight crime, but this town was not it. She would go downstairs, say goodbye to George and her and turtle would go on their normal, everyday walk. The elevator landed on the last floor. The lobby looked normal. Everything was calm, still, but outside, there were police cars, concerned passerbyers, George seeming stressed and ambushed. And of course, there was Coco, smoking a cigarette calmly on the sidelines.Turtle looked at me, “I told you,” I felt a rush of adrenaline, this was it. Turtle and I were gonna find out what happened, and maybe even catch a criminal.
